Bikers Respond to Ontario HOV Issue 2008-03-31
March 31, 2008 - The OCC Information Booth at the National Motorcycle Show was an extremely busy place this past weekend. Motorcyclist from all corners of the province were eager to place their signatures on the OCC petition to demonstrate their discontent regarding the current law prohibiting single rider, two-wheeled motorized vehicles from entering and using the High Occupancy Vehicle lanes established on Ontario highways. Hard copy signatures totaled 460 and all supporters were eager to take additional petition flyers to their friends, which were unable to attend the show, detailing the location of the online petition that is also growing daily.

This issue is a no-brainer, justified and fairly easy to rectify, but it appears that the current provincial government is determined to avoid the obvious and has no plans to change the current rules that govern HOV lane access. It now falls to us, the citizens of Ontario that have huge safety, social and environmental issues regarding this subject, to take a stand and make an affirmative statement that cannot be ignored. It is our ambition to present a 5000 name petition to the provincial government when they convene for the fall session of the Ontario Legislature.

Toronto Public Works Recommends Motorcycle Access to HOV Lanes 2007-12-04
December 1st, 2007

Many of you may recall that in 2005, Ward 29 Councillor Mr. Case Ootes convinced Toronto City Council to allow motorcycles and scooters to park for free at the city’s park-and-display metered spaces. Fast-forward to May of this year when a proposal by Mr. Ootes was presented to Toronto’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee, requesting the committee explore the possibility of allowing motorized two-wheeled vehicles to use the city’s HOV lanes. Currently, Toronto’s HOV lanes only allow access to vehicles with three or more passengers.

That proposal has now materialized into a recommendation by the committee to allow motorcycles and scooters access to the HOV lanes on city streets. BRAVO! And a huge round of applause to the Public Works Committee, and especially to Councillor Ootes, for recognizing the benefits to be gained by this decision. The benefits of increased fuel economy, rider safety, improved highway congestion and less vehicle omissions significantly underscore the need to ease the HOV requirements.

Now wouldn’t it be a perfect world if the Ontario Liberals would follow Toronto’s lead? At present, only passenger vehicles carrying two or more people can use High Occupancy Vehicle lanes on Ontario highways legally.

The Ontario Confederation of Clubs asks that all motorcyclists contact their MPP requesting that the Province of Ontario seriously look into the benefits of allowing single rider, motorized two-wheeled vehicles to legally use the Ontario HOV lanes.

New Web Site Unveiled 2007-11-03
Thanks to the cooperation of Scary Larry our Treasurer, Cookie our Recording Secretary and D'Arcy our new Webmaster, a new web site has been published. This new web site is database driven allowing pages to be added and edited by a small group of people rather than funnelling everything through one person. We hope that this will allow us to keep the site more up to date going forward.
